Ceramic coating is one of the best investments you can make for your vehicle — but it's not maintenance-free. Done right, your coating can last 5–7 years. Done wrong, you'll degrade it in 12 months and wonder why you paid for it.
Here's the complete maintenance guide we give every LabShine customer after their coating is applied.
The First 7 Days Are Critical
Fresh ceramic coating needs time to fully cure. During the first week:
- Do NOT wash the car — water can interfere with the curing process
- Avoid parking under trees — sap and bird droppings can bond before the coating fully hardens
- No rain if possible — if it does rain, don't wipe the car down — let it air dry
- No wax or sealant — it will interfere with the coating's bond
Houston-specific note: In summer, curing happens faster due to heat. In winter, give it a full 7 days minimum since cooler temps slow the chemical bonding process.
How to Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car
The Two-Bucket Method
Always use two buckets — one with soapy water, one with clean rinse water. Dip your wash mitt in soap, wash a panel, rinse the mitt in the clean bucket before going back to soap. This prevents dirt from being dragged across your coating.
Use a pH-Neutral Soap
Regular dish soap and harsh car shampoos strip the coating's hydrophobic layer. Use a pH-neutral shampoo specifically formulated for coated vehicles. Brands like Chemical Guys Hydro Suds or Adam's Ceramic Boost Shampoo work well.
Avoid Automatic Car Washes
Brush-style automatic washes will scratch your coating. If you must use a car wash, touchless only. Better yet, hand wash or call us.
What to Apply (and What NOT To)
- ✅ DO use: Ceramic spray toppers (SiO2 spray detailers) every 3–4 months to maintain hydrophobicity
- ✅ DO use: Quick detailers between washes to remove light dust and fingerprints
- ❌ DON'T use: Wax — it sits on top of the coating and clogs the pores
- ❌ DON'T use: Compound or polish — you'll cut through the coating
- ❌ DON'T use: All-purpose cleaners on paint — too aggressive
Annual Maintenance Detail
Once a year, have a professional do a coating maintenance service. This includes:
- Iron decontamination wash to remove embedded particles
- Clay bar treatment to pull surface contamination
- SiO2 booster application to restore hydrophobic performance
- Inspection of coating integrity
This service extends your coating's life significantly and usually costs far less than recoating.
